Charitindie 2024 - Everything You Need To Know

A year goes by so quickly! The Charitindie Collective are back to bring you their second annual charity livestreaming event, this time in support of US climate change organisation Sunrise Movement.

Featuring fourteen artists, Charitindie 2024 will be available to watch live on Twitch on Saturday 30th March at 6pm GMT. For North American viewers, this will be 11am PDT, 1pm CDT and 2pm EDT. If you’re lucky enough to live in New Zealand, the livestream will begin on Sunday 31st at 7am NZDT.

But what is all this about? How did Charitindie begin? Check out our piece for Charitindie 2023 where we introduce you to our livestream organiser and compère Cayt W. You can also view our round-up of that event and the full stream on YouTube.

‘Organising Charitindie is one of my greatest joys! As the organiser, I have the privilege of seeing all the sets before anyone else, it gets me so excited to share them. Not to mention the opportunity to meet so many new and wonderful artists. Best of all is that I get to bring all these people together in support of a worthy cause. When passionate creatives get together and concentrate their passion into one project, marvellous things are sure to ensue. Charitindie is still very much in its infancy, but I have the unique position of seeing how this year's gig has already grown bigger than last year's and I know we will only go up from here.’ – Cayt W

Follow our Charitindie 2024 Spotify playlist above to sample the music of our performers. If you’d like to cut to the chase and give to the Sunrise Movement, hit the donate button below. Continue reading to find out more about the performers and our chosen charity this year.

Having played music from their band Beanie In The Bath for the first Charitindie livestream, songwriter Flynn is back to do it all again. Performing from Norwich, England, this time they’re under their own moniker Secret Pigeon to open Charitindie 2024! The solo project has been off to a great start for Flynn, who released their debut single ‘The Hedgehog’ last summer and their first EP ‘Homing’ in February. The music explores Flynn’s folk-leaning tendencies away from the punkier sound of Beanie In The Bath, with acoustic guitars and banjo at the core of Secret Pigeon’s sound.

Last year, they wowed the Twitch chat room with their storytelling in an unreleased track, ‘I Once Saw Nick Knowles In Sainsbury’s’. (Please put this out Flynn, there’s still time!) This time around, Secret Pigeon will be performing a mixture of songs from their EP, new music and a track by Beanie In The Bath during their set.

Secret Pigeon will be taking to the proverbial Charitindie stage on March 30th from 6pm GMT, 11am PDT, 1pm CDT, 2pm EDT and 7am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Secret Pigeon on Instagram @secretpigeonmusic and on Twitter @FlynnKenned. Check out their music on Spotify here.

We’re moving to the Northwest of the UK to welcome producer and songwriter Dullan to Charitindie 2024! As keen listeners of The Beach Boys, we always delight in Dullan’s tweets on their music, and can certainly get behind the way he infuses their sound into his songwriting.

Dullan began this project in 2022 with the release of ‘Sleeping Seaglass’, a joint single with vocalist Annabelle Johnson. ‘Back Inside’ was written as part of the Forthlin Sessions by The National Trust in celebration of Paul McCartney’s 80th birthday. Dullan and a small pool of other artists were invited to McCartney’s childhood home, which served as inspiration for the song. This influence of 1960’s music (including The Beach Boys specifically) can be heard in Dullan’s most recent single, ‘The Sun Is On Its Way’.

As well as being a home for his music, his YouTube channel also hosts their discussions in the artform. Check out Dullan’s critique of hot takes with Pacing for thoughts on Radiohead, The Beatles, country and bluegrass music. Dullan’s Charitindie set will include a mixture of their singles and some new songs, due for release later this year!

Dullan will be playing Charitindie on March 30th from 6:20pm GMT, 11:20am PDT, 1:20pm CDT, 2:20pm EDT and 7:20am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Dullan on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and Facebook @dullanmusic. Check out their singles on Spotify here.

Our third act, West-Londoner Mari Dangerfield, is also a new artist to Charitindie! But she’s anything but new to Moths and Giraffes. We first wrote about her music in 2021 upon the release of her single ‘Webcam’, inspired by the increasingly disconnected world we found ourselves in during the pandemic. Back then, Mari infused her music with the electronic instrument stylophone, telling us she had eleven versions of the instrument during our Q&A!

‘Webcam’ would later appear on her debut album, ‘Love And Other Machines’. Initially released independently, the record would be re-issued by Dimple Discs in 2023 upon Dangerfield signing with the label the year prior. Since then we’ve spotted the album in HMV, as well as her recent EP ‘Eco-Fever’. The more dance-orientated collection leaves behind the sound of stylophone and lyrically dives into Mari’s anxieties around the climate crisis. ‘Fashion Haul’ is a damning look at the fast-fashion industry and the role it plays in wrecking the environment. For Charitindie, Mari will be playing a mixture of songs from her debut album and ‘Eco-Fever’.

Mari Dangerfield will be performing as part of Charitindie on March 30th from 6:35pm GMT, 11:35am PDT, 1:35pm CDT, 2:35pm EDT and 7:35am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Mari Dangerfield on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and Facebook @maridangerfield. Purchase her music on Bandcamp and stream on Spotify.

Having opened Charitindie 2023, Oxfordshire songwriter and bedroom producer Edward Woodley returns to Charitindie under a new name – Gym Socks. Previously releasing music under the name Count to Ten with Nobody, we wrote about his EP ‘Dont Tell Ur Friends About Me’ back in September. The four-track collection features three polished tracks plus a bonus taped demo. While the drum machine and bass riff in ‘Pavement Dandelions’ deviates from his usual indie-acoustic style, it was the dreamy ‘Gingerbread’ that sparked attention, streaming over six thousand times on Spotify.

With Edward exploring different visual presentations in TikTok and Twitch, the YouTube account of Gym Socks is home not only to his music, but also his vlogs celebrating queerness. Particularly, his recent humorous criticism of anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church song parodies is a sight to behold. For this year’s Charitindie stream, Gym Socks will be playing a new, as yet unreleased song.

Gym Socks will be playing Charitindie on March 30th from 6:50pm GMT, 11:50am PDT, 1:50pm CDT, 2:50pm EDT and 7:50am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Gym Socks on Instagram @gym_socksss and on Twitter @biglosergymsock. Purchase Gym’s music on Bandcamp and stream on Spotify.

Heading north to York, we’re pleased to welcome back Jeremy M to Charitindie! In last year’s stream, he wowed viewers with an acoustic collection of original tracks, lifted by his delicate vocal delivery. Part of his set included his single ‘boys don’t cry’, released in 2022 along with ‘gone forever’. Both songs have received support from BBC Introducing in York and North Yorkshire and feature as part of his forthcoming ‘is it too late?’ EP, due for release in 2024.

Jeremy M was one of several Charitindie Collective artists to contribute to our piece celebrating the music of Taylor Swift last summer. With each artist writing about a specific song that inspired them, Jeremy chose ‘cardigan’ from Swift’s critically acclaimed ‘folklore’ album.

In October, Jeremy M collaborated with fellow Charitindie performer Tarquin Alexandra to release a remix of ‘boys don’t cry’. This latest addition to the forthcoming EP blends the gorgeous voices of both artists, a feat made possible by the cross-pollination Charitindie inspires! For this year’s stream, Jeremy M will be playing a set of new unreleased music.

Jeremy M will be on Charitindie on March 30th from 6:55pm GMT, 11:55am PDT, 1:55pm CDT, 2:55pm EDT and 7:55am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Jeremy M on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and Facebook @jeremymonline. Check out his music on Bandcamp and Spotify.

Of course you’ve already met Cayt W, and we’re delighted to say they will be performing a set of their own again this year! Based in Sheffield, Cayt played some songs from their ‘Mandatory’ EP for Charitindie 2023, plus a couple of unreleased tracks at the time. With their careful and considered delivery, these newer songs later made up part of ‘The First Rain In Eden’ EP, finally released in October after years of work. The four-track collection splits its time between acoustic songs like the title piece, and a programmed sound in ‘Attention’, similar to Cayt’s prior work on ‘Mandatory’.

As well as working on their own music (and organising Charitindie!), Cayt has begun producing with other artists, including with Polish acting student and musician Cynka for her single ‘coffee date’. Despite not yet performing in Charitindie, Cynka is best known to us as having come up with this organisation’s name! For Charitindie 2024, Cayt W will be playing a mixture of old music, unreleased songs and a cover.

Cayt W will be playing their set on Charitindie on March 30th from 7:10pm GMT, 12:10pm PDT, 2:10pm CDT, 3:10pm EDT and 8:10am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Cayt W on Instagram and Twitter @caytwmusic. Purchase their music on Bandcamp and stream on Spotify.

Our stream heads to the United States for the first time now, to Nashville, Tennessee! Readers of Moths and Giraffes will be familiar with Copeland James, whose debut album ‘Small Talk’ we wrote about at the end of 2023. Though we’re skipping ahead! Following several demo releases on Bandcamp and beyond, Copeland put out their first single at the end of 2022 entitled ‘Restless In Rome’. Their piano-centric style is bolstered by their talented studio band and live strings, a lyrical and musical presentation we described as ‘timeless’.

With three more singles leading up to their album, Copeland performed for Charitindie 2023, keytar and all, closing the first livestream. Around the release of ‘Small Talk’, James also contributed to our Taylor Swift article, choosing the vault track from ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’ entitled ‘Nothing New’. Copeland James returns to Charitindie to play a mixture of music from their album, a resurrected track (our livestream is over Easter after all) and a cover!

Copeland James will be performing on Charitindie on March 30th from 7:30pm GMT, 12:30pm PDT, 2:30pm CDT, 3:30pm EDT and 8:30am NZDT (on March 31st).

‘We’re a movement of young people fighting to stop the climate crisis and win a Green New Deal.’ – Sunrise Movement (About Sunrise, 2024)

We’re going to take a quick break from introducing our artists to tell you more about the charity we’re supporting this year. The climate crisis is undeniably the biggest adversary of the human race. With the consequences of climate inaction becoming greater with every passing decade, The Charitindie Collective saw fit to support a climate crisis charity for this year’s stream.

The Sunrise Movement is a U.S.-based charity with a dual purpose. The first is to push forward a Green New Deal to the people in government that can help enact meaningful change for generations to come. The second is to build community, investing in working class people and creating good union jobs. Sunrise Movement puts it to ordinary people to make a choice: ‘Are we going to fight for power to stop the climate crisis, or are we going to let billionaires and fossil fuel executives lead us to a hotter, more brutal world?’

To support a charity with these goals is to set an example the world over that people want a cleaner and more sustainable future for generations to come. That’s why everyone at Charitindie is proud to support the Sunrise Movement and we thank you for any contribution you can give towards them.

Let’s tell you about the rest of our artists. New Jersey folk singer/songwriter Scullin Bonez is back for Charitindie 2024! Last year’s stream saw them playing an acoustic track called ‘Waiting On The 180’, one of several original songs to be found on their YouTube channel. Scullin’s debut single ‘Greedy Pockets’ was released in 2022. The crunchy guitar track was inspired by the injustice of the American healthcare system, and the personal cost to Bonez while managing a Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis.

In between studying to be a chef in Providence, Rhode Island, Scullin has formed a duo with guitarist Matt Peck called Hydrangea Strangea, performing classic rock covers and original songs. For Charitindie 2024, Bonez will be performing a cover of one of these classics.

Scullin Bonez will be performing on Charitindie on March 30th from 7:45pm GMT, 12:45pm PDT, 2:45pm CDT, 3:45pm EDT and 8:45am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Scullin Bonez on Instagram and TikTok @scullin_bonez, and on Twitter @cannedbonez. Listen to their music on Spotify.

With the most songs performed in any set in last year’s stream, Uncle Emmington is back to do it all again for Charitindie 2024! This songwriter from Alabama prides their authorship on being short and sweet, making their thirty-one track album ‘Alphabet Soup’ like a collection of short stories. Of these, we wrote about her single ‘No Cowboys Are Coming’ and its accompanying music video in which Em plays both the damsel, and the would-be hero. Is the damsel rescued from the train tracks or does she have to do everything herself?

Em also contributed to our Taylor Swift article, telling a story about growing up with the song ‘Holy Ground’ from the ‘Red’ album. In our ‘Cowboys’ Q&A, Em discussed Swift further, also citing ‘Cruel Summer’, ‘Glitch’ and ‘Our Song’ as being amongst their favourites. For Charitindie 2024, Uncle Emmington will play a mixture of tracks from ‘Alphabet Soup’ and some new songs.

Uncle Emmington will be playing Charitindie on March 30th from 7:55pm GMT, 12:55pm PDT, 2:55pm CDT, 3:55pm EDT and 8:55am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Uncle Emmington on Instagram and TikTok @uncle_emmington, on Facebook @UncleEmmington and on Twitter @unc_emm. Stream the music of Uncle Emmington on Spotify.

Hailing from Texas, Ellis Piper is a voice for the ages, another artist who returns to Charitindie under a new name! Having previously played as Piper Wildwood, her first set consisted of tracks from her album ‘reaching for the sun’. Around the same time as Charitindie 2023, Ellis put out a deluxe edition of the album to celebrate its one-year anniversary, also featuring their stripped-back Charitindie set along with instrumentals, demos and remixes.

With a mixture of psychology and music university studies taking precedence, Ellis Piper has continued to release her ‘volume’ collections. ‘volume two’ is a mixture of covers and original demos, with songs by The Chicks, Carole King and dodie. The second volume even includes a transatlantic collaboration with Beanie In The Bath of Orla Gartland’s ‘Zombie’. As well as the entire album in instrumental format, ‘volume three’ takes in songs by Taylor Swift, The Beatles and Fleetwood Mac. For Charitindie 2024, Ellis Piper will be playing three brand-new songs.

Ellis Piper will be playing their set on Charitindie on March 30th from 8:20pm GMT, 1:20pm PDT, 3:20pm CDT, 4:20pm EDT and 9:20am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Ellis Piper on Instagram, TikTok and Twitter @ellispipermusic. Purchase their music on Bandcamp and stream on Spotify.

With vocalist Brianna Carmel featuring on our 2023 stream, this time they’re bringing their songwriting partner Josiah Masteller for a set from Blooming Heads. The Californian duo from Sacramento released their debut EP in 2021, ‘The Background’ collecting their early demos in support of community project NorCal Resist.

Since then, they put out a re-recorded single from the set called ‘Axis Access’, taken from their forthcoming album ‘Shed Old Skin’, also marking the duo’s first music video. Of all the artists on our line-up this year, Blooming Heads are the most seasoned of live performers, as evidenced by their wealth of gig footage on their YouTube channel. We look forward to seeing that energy brought to Charitindie 2024 where they’ll be playing a mixture of familiar songs and unreleased music.

Blooming Heads will be performing their set on Charitindie on March 30th from 8:45pm GMT, 1:45pm PDT, 3:45pm CDT, 4:45pm EDT and 9:45am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Blooming Heads on Instagram @bloomingheads916, and on TikTok and Twitter @bloomingheads. Pick up their EP on Bandcamp and listen to their music on Spotify.

Since playing Charitindie 2023, the San Jose-based, Florida-born Pacing has had a busy year! She released her EP ‘Snake Facts’ mere days after the stream, and having previewed her single ‘Bite Me’, put that out as her first single from her debut album. The title of which is: ‘Real Poetry Is Always About Plants and Birds and Trees and The Animals and Milk and Honey Breathing In The Pink But Real Life Is Behind A Screen’. We charted her story in one of our biggest articles yet, taking in her earlier work and focussing on the album with a Q&A from Pacing and her co-producer Sun Kin late last year.

As another artist who contributed to our Taylor Swift article, Pacing’s choice was the title track from Swift’s second album ‘Fearless’. Specifically citing the original and not the 2021 re-recording, Pacing boiled the difference down to its opening refrain - ‘the snare hit in the rerecording sucks.’

Pacing has also been bringing the world of Charitindie into the real world, bumping into Uncle Emmington and sharing stages with Copeland James and Blooming Heads across multiple states. More recently, she teamed up with Career Woman to release a new single called ‘Boyfriends’ and remixed Josaleigh Pollett’s ‘YKWIM’. For Charitindie 2024, Pacing will be playing a mixture of songs from her mixtape ‘hatemail’, debut album and an older song.

Pacing will be playing Charitindie on March 30th from 9:10pm GMT, 2:10pm PDT, 4:10pm CDT, 5:10pm EDT and 10:10am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Pacing on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter @pacingmusic. Give her your money on Bandcamp and stream on Spotify.

Travelling north into Canada, we’re keen to revisit the work of Tarquin Alexandra, who has been busy reinventing her sound in late 2023. Taking a trip through time on Instagram, Tarquin performed covers in her own style dating from the 2020’s right down to the 1930’s, also imitating the looks and fashion from those eras. Over a couple of months, Alexandra recorded sixteen videos taking in music by Lizzy McAlpine, Alvvays, Taylor Swift, Mika, Belle & Sebastian, Blondie, Peter Allen, The Beatles, The Mamas & The Papas, The Chords, Dean Martin and The Ink Spots.

Despite suffering a health setback, Tarquin still announced her debut album at the conclusion of these videos, with the rest of the details still forthcoming. This new work will no doubt sit proudly alongside her 2020 single ‘Symptoms Song’ (which now has over 170,000 Spotify streams!), her 2021 EP ‘A Tyrant’s Demise’, and her 2023 single ‘I Play Me Well’.

As another artist who played our first Charitindie event, we’re over the moon Tarquin has been able to contribute a second time. Tarquin will be playing a mixture of new music, one of the aforementioned time travelling covers, and some fan-favourites.

Tarquin Alexandra will be performing on Charitindie on March 30th from 9:30pm GMT, 2:30pm PDT, 4:30pm CDT, 5:30pm EDT and 10:30am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Tarquin Alexandra on Instagram and TikTok @tarquinalexandra, and on Twitter @tarqalexandra. Explore her discography on Bandcamp and stream on Spotify.

For our final Charitindie 2024 set, we will be heading to New Zealand to meet Beth Torrance! Her debut album, ‘let’s move to the seaside and never feel lonely again’ is an intimate collection of acoustic songs released in 2022. The title track was released as a single, its yearning lyricism a central focus, accompanied by sweeping cello from Rachel Wells. The self-produced music video features the gorgeous New Zealand sky and coastline, revealing just as much about the soul of Beth Torrance as her music does.

Elsewhere, Beth has recorded covers for Bandcamp and YouTube of artists such as Conan Gray, Girl In Red and Alex G. This year she’s set to release her follow-up EP entitled ‘tiny flowers’, of which an early sampling can be heard in our livestream, along with a snippet of her debut album!

Beth Torrance will be performing her set on Charitindie on March 30th from 9:45pm GMT, 2:45pm PDT, 4:45pm CDT, 5:45pm EDT and 10:45am NZDT (on March 31st).

Follow Beth on Instagram @beth.torrance and check out their music on Spotify and Bandcamp.

On behalf of The Charitindie Collective, we look forward to seeing you on Twitch on March 30th for a few hours of great music in support of the Sunrise Movement! We’ll be back to tell you more about the stream as it happened. In the meantime, thank you for supporting Charitindie and keep loving the music you love.
